Slow Down, Tune In and Flow with Qi Gong
The power of breath, combined with our voice and the ancient flow of qi gong soothes and restores. The ability to slow down our breathing and become conscious of it is an impactful tool we can take with us everywhere we go. Our capacity to take control of the flow and rhythm of our breath allows us to calm our heart rate, infuse the body with more oxygen and relax the nervous system. When we incorporate sound techniques we invite the elongation of the exhale and use the vibration of the vocal cords to further soothe and relax the body and give the mind a point of focus in the present.
Aware and present in the body, we introduce a variety of qi gong movements. Beginning with the arms swinging lightly, to open the meridians and energy lines in the body and enliven the senses. To get the chi or energy flowing from head to toe paint rainbows over the body with the arms, reaching down to the floor on each side of the body, flowing from side to side. Move the arms with the breath, lifting arms on the inhale, lowering on the exhale. The goal is presence in the body, awareness of the sensations, increasing mobility. If there is stiffness or pain, tension, trapped stress in the body, the flow of qi gong aims to release it, to bring a greater sense of ease to body and mind. We will continue to explore the gentle flow of qi gong and yoga in the coming weeks.
