LIVING WITH AN OPEN HEART
This week in our Self-Care, Tuesday group, we shared about the places we go when the heart is open. It can feel very vulnerable to live with an open heart and yet, it is our best option.
As a raregiver, you may feel the immense tenderness of being alive, and how fragile this human body is while at the same time being incredibly resilient. As a raregiver, you will face a lot of loss, loss of the dreams of what might have been, loss of your Rare child's abilities, and eventually loss of those whom you love.
Being alive
When you live with an open heart, you avail yourself to the possibility of being utterly and totally alive, which also renders you vulnerable to being hurt or betrayed. And yet living with an open heart means that you have the opportunity for true intimacy with yourself and others.
Finding peace
As Queen Elizabeth said, "Stay calm and carry-on.” The question is how do you do this when someone you love dies? How do you stay calm and continue to breathe when things go sideways? As a raregiver, the invitation is to live your life and keep pursuing your dreams even after your Rare child passes on to the next world.
This wisdom came from one of our group members who has lost more than one Rare child. She said it was important to continue to work on projects that are fulfilling for you. Slow down and reevaluate your life.
Emotional hangovers
Raregivers are prone to get what may be called emotional hangovers after they have attended a doctor's appointment and had an extensive clinical conversation. What if you tended to yourself during the meeting with the doctor. Perhaps you practice staying present and restricting yourself from falling into the "what ifs.” Pause and feel as you go.
